One of my favourite historical figures was Richard the 1st and I would love to see hist adventures portrayed in a good movie.

RICHARD I COEUR DE LION ('THE LIONHEART') (r. 1189-1199)

Henry's elder son, Richard I (reigned 1189-99), fulfilled his main ambition by going on crusade in 1190, leaving the ruling of England to others. After his victories over Saladin at the siege of Acre and the battles of Arsuf and Jaffa, concluded by the treaty of Jaffa (1192), Richard was returning from the Holy Land when he was captured in Austria. In early 1193, Richard was transferred to Emperor Henry VI's custody.

In Richard's absence, King Philip of France failed to obtain Richard's French possessions through invasion or negotiation. In England, Richard's brother John occupied Windsor Castle and prepared an invasion of England by Flemish mercenaries, accompanied by armed uprisings. Their mother, Queen Eleanor, took firm action against John by strengthening garrisons and again exacting oaths of allegiance to the king. John's subversive activities were ended by the payment of a crushing ransom of 150,000 marks of silver to the emperor, for Richard's release in 1194. Warned by Philip's famous message 'look to yourself, the devil is loosed', John fled to the French court.

On his return to England, Richard was recrowned at Winchester in 1194. Five years later he died in France during a minor siege against a rebellious baron. By the time of his death, Richard had recovered all his lands. His success was short-lived. In 1199 his brother John became king and Philip successfully invaded Normandy. By 1203, John had retreated to England, losing his French lands of Normandy and Anjou by 1205.

Yours SW

And do you know that his ship wrecked on the shores of an island nearby (on the first picture up left corner!) my home town dubrovnik and that he gave the money to my town so they could build a chatedral (something like honorign the lord all mighty Razz ) but the cathedral was destroied in the earth quake of 1667, now there is a new (from 1667 lol) cathedral over it! Also here is a little picture of the DUBROVNIK... watch and admire:

Yes but this town IS a 'BIT' older... also his walls were almost never borken... once the vikings from south of Italy counqerd it for a year and was taken back after and before that no one entered the wall except its own citizens unitl napoleon arrived, and he promissed (well not him on of his generals) that the armie will just pass thourght the city into the harbour so they could get onto ships, and the govement accpeted cause if the declined they would ceartenly be destroied (the republic of DUbrovink didnt have a great armie, it was just a tradeing countrie and was getting land by buying it not counqering it) and after the french armie entered they ve broken the promise and taken the city without a single shot fired... it was in 1806 and in 1808 Republic of Dubrovnik was no more... that was the end of a millenium old countrie!

Bruges less old that Dubrovnik??? Man, Bruges excists since 7th century! Maybe that is a bit less old lol but not much! The walls of Bruges have unfortunately been teared down by now, all old city walls have torn down in Flanders, only a few gates here and there remain. or no maybe not, the walls of Ieper still stand (or at least part of the original wall, there wasn t much left of it after WWI) and i think the walls of Nieuwpoort still stand. lol

I can never understand why the British admire Richard the Lionheart so much.

He was a King that just about immediately went to war against the infidels after his coronation (at great cost and imposed new taxes), hardly administering his country while he was away, leaving it to his brother John, got captured on his way back while returning to England which eventually cost his country 30 tons of gold for his ransom payment and then basically went back to France after being released to then die of a wound infection to his neck by an arrow (that by some accounts an unarmoured King Richard actually daring an archer to shoot at him).

During the 10 years he was King he spent only 6 months in England, his native language was French and also he is buried in France.

Laughing Cool Very Happy Shocked Rolling Eyes Wink

Cheers,
Blackpool

That because alot of France WAS England during that time period...France was fairly small then as England owned at least half of it.

Also the economy in English territories did fairly well during the his rule and you have to remember the french and german kings went out on the third crusade at the same time(Germans never really made it)...so he wasn't that terrible for the time period...

Another thing is that he always led from the front even when sick and was fairly mericful to those who kept their honour(he did kill 3000 muslim prisoners after waiting WAY past the alotted time slot for Saladin to hold his part of the bargain..simply couldn't feed them any more.)

Also he was the only leader at the time who had equalled, perhaps even bettered, Saladin.

He spoke French because that was the language most commonly used by the English(Because of the Normans) until around the Hundred Year's War.

I'm American and I admire the guy...you have to think about him in comparison to others in his time though to see him as admirable.

Gex can we switch homes? I want to live there Shocked

Cheers Voltigeur!

Many thanks for the additional information. That certainly has helped me in understanding why the guy still holds such admiration and interest even today.

Cheers,

There was one time he lead from the rear though...that was on cyprus when the Cypriot Emperor kept attacking in the rear. He was kind of like the Medieval equivalent of Rambo in the eyes of many in the period. I think it was on Cyprus that he was said to have advanced up the beach in the lead with a crossbow in one hand and a sword in the other. I think part of his fame in his own time though had to do with the people he was surrounded with(Kind of like all the press surrounding celebrities today) like his mother,Eleanor of Aquitane, and he had quite the run in with William Marshal which is(Correct me if you have found otherwise) I believe the only time he is recorded to have begged for his life

"After two years fighting in Syria with Guy of Lusignan, King of Jerusalem,William returned home to join King Henry, who was fighting his two remaining sons Richard and John. It was during a skirmish in Normandy that William had his famous encounter with Richard: hard on the heels of William's rearguard, Richard was suddenly confronted by William, who had turned and charged with lance levelled. Neither wore armour since neither expected a fight, and Richard was at William's mercy.

'By God's legs, do not kill me, Marshal, for I am unarmed,' Richard pleaded.

'No, let the devil kill you, for I won't,' William answered and ran his lance through Richard's horse. "

William Marshal was perhaps the most famous knight of all the middle ages and he had a fearsome reputation both in the tournaments(which were VERY brutal affairs in those days and were often fatal as they were fought as actual battles in an attempt to get other knights and lords to surrender themselves to be sold for ransom or to surrender belongings, land and/or animals.) and on the battlefield as he was basically undefeated...except once when he was captured by some thugs who ransomed him when he was younger. He was accused of having an affair with Richard's mother as well Rolling Eyes

Sorry about going on like that...just the middle ages is my #1 area of interest. I'm really not trying to show off or anything(Trust me I go on like this with everyone. Thank God my GF is as tolerant as she is!) just trying to be informative. Wink
