Hi guys

Here is small historical tournament -I hope it will be nice opportunity for refreshing this forum....
The rules are very simple :
One person bringing the historical question - this who will brings rights answer can make a new question ( this is award ! )
However after answer such person should wait as her answer is accepted by person who created a question...
IF none will bring correct answer within 3 days - a person who asked can make another question....
Asking person can add later some suggestions and prompt - in case when its clear that question is rather difficult..
Question should be about historical matter - possible to answer for all - so don’t ask for example “ How many girls friends I had in school ?” - this question for most of us is “historical” but answer is rather impossible to find in any books...

Ok. Here is the first question - which is very very easy !
All we know the Epitaph at Thermopylae ( written after the battle ) There is so many translation of it, but most are similar - here u have few examples :

“Four thousand of us fought three million.
When you visit Sparta, tell them:
Here, the soldiers kept their word”

"Go tell the Spartans, thou that passest by,
That faithful to their precepts here we lie."

„Stranger, tell the Lacedaemonians that we lie here, obedient to their words”

The question is : who was author of this epitaph -poem ? I mean what was name of writer ?

regards
kosc

Hmmmmm, Ok.....

The Sphinx of Egypt...... Myth has it that the Sphinx would ask a riddle of all who wanted to walk by her. If you answered the riddle correctly she would let you walk, if you answered incorrectly she would kill you. Eventually, Oedipus solved the riddle and the Sphinx killed herself.

Here is the riddle: "What has four legs in the morning, two legs in the midday, and three legs in the night?"
Because Oedipus answered it correctly, he became the king of Thebes. After Oedipus gave the right answer to the riddle, the sphinx jumped off a cliff and hit her head causing all different colored blood to gush out. That is how color came upon earth according to the myth.

Oedipus Explains the Riddle of the Sphinx
Jean August Dominique Ingres
Canvas, 1808

Here is the history question..... What is the answer Oedipus gave to the Sphinx Question

LOL THEO ! I wish to be so clever as hero of your story - and to be able to find the answer using my head not books - however - i was reading this myth few times and i remember the answer no chance...
Answer was HUMAN
Human using 4 legs when is child
Human use 2 legs when is adult
HUman use 3 legs when is old ( 2 legs + wooden stick )

So can go or Sphinx will kill me now ?

Complete stab in the dark but I'm quite sure I've heard the answer to this before but I can't quite remember the actual explaination. If I am correct then the first person who can post their question after Theo says it is correct can use my turn to give the question.

Is the answer : MAN ?? Cool Wink

I suppose that would be Lee Marvin. Not too hard for me... remember I was in the U.S. Marine Corps for 4 years.

Avatar is coming soon.

Here is the history question.... 2 part question.....

In America in the 1800's there was created a new religious group of people.

The were known as Shakers.

The easy part is: Why were they known as Shakers?

The harder question is: Why are there now no more Shakers alive?

Question Very Happy
