They wore faded, stained, ill-fitting, hot uniforms. The jackets of the uniforms for most of the enlisted men were mostly made of heavy wool. They were dyed with vegetable dye, which according to many accounts, ran and faded horribly due to the 24 hrs of downpore the day before. The uniforms were mostly made in 3 standardized sizes, and the boots were symetrical, intended to fit either foot.
That about covers it, unless you want me to detail the troops and uniforms of some 15 different nations that were represented at Waterloo, each with their several different uniforms for infantry, cavalry, artillery, and special forces. I check in my private library, and I find 2 complete books about the armies and uniforms of Waterloo. Not the battle itself, just the troops and what they wore.
- Uniforms of Waterloo in Colour by Philip Haythornthwaite from Blandford Press in London
- 1815- The Armies at Waterloo by Ugo Pericoli from Charles Scribner's Sons in New York
It might be helpful to search the WWW for Waterloo.
