I didn't see the movie yet, I'll have to order it first. But from a good source I heard that this is an INCREDIBLE movie!
Visit http://www.ihffilm.com/ihf/22286.html for more info
or read here the content:
"One of the Third Reich's most ambitious spectaculars, three years in the making, mobilized Germany's most talented artists and thousands of extras to re-create the true story of a Prussian town's rebellion against Napoleon's army of occupation. Laced with anti-Christian symbolism and National Socialist ideology, the film is a mirror of Hitler Germany's own war for survival. In its characterization of Kolberg's besieged citizenry, the epic allegorically reflects the spirit of fanatical resolve to fight on, that Nazi propaganda was attempting to instill in the German population during the final years of World War II. The film was directed by Veit Harlan, with music by Norbert Schultze."
Cheers, this one is a must.

YEs,
That does look incredible UgEO, it's especially interesting given the times in which it was made, the fact that all these extras probably died shorty after the makeing of the film, it's real propoganda angle for German resistance, etc.
Of course we all know of the similar film "Alexander Nevsky", the Russian film by Eisenstein, which draws parellels between the Teutonic Knights of old and the German army of WWII, infusing a demonic purpose to their mission and foretelling eventual defeat for their Nazi enemies just as before on Lake Peipus. Even the helmets of the German foot soldiers resembled the German helmets of WWII.
I love to find books and films that are significant because of their placement in time...one example; there is a great used book store attached to our library, I found there once an old book for $1 that was entitled something like "Jewish Life and Customs in Poland", the date, 1932! How erie and haunting it was to read through this expose of daily life, ritual, criticisms, praise, etc knowing that soon after the release of this book "Jewish Life" in Poland would cease to exhist with the forces of Nazism and Communism crushing in from both sides.
There is another neat little book in my collection that is an old American history book and on it's front it shows an OLD ship (the Mayflower) and a MODERN ship (one that looks like the Maine).
OK, I have a question! I am really trying to find some movies with great battle action from the wars of Austrian Succession or 7 Years War in Europe. The only thing so far that I can recall is a brief battle in the movie Barry Lyndon. I want MORE such action, and I can't find anything. There's PLENTY of American Civil War, Napoleonic War etc but when was the last time you saw some major 7 Years War battle scenes? Even old movies, I don't care, I must find some....any leads? _________________

Hi Mate
Interesting reply and nice examples. You understood it in all aspects. Like you said, propaganda.. No wonder it was Goebbles who came up with the idea of making that film.
And hey, lol, movies on Austrian Succession and 7 Years War... that's my search too. I bought Barry Lyndon for the same cause (well, whole movie is a delight) and that's it Well, I met a guy recently who is much more into movies than I am, so I'll forward your question. He 'll tear his hair out of his head by hearing our request lol.
write you soon,

I see they have foreifn films on the site. The majority are from USSR. My dad told me once that he watched lots of russian movies in the 50s when he was young. He said that there were lots of scream and shoot in them and often huge tragedies from russian history. Well...lets go for tradgedies but the rest sounds like something for me. Is there any good films recommended.
Alas..Barry Lyndon is a tragic movie. Very empty sort of and I hated to see how bad he treated the widow and her son. Very stupid of him, he deserved his destiny. _________________
