I got to watch "Master and Commander" last night. Boy is it a good movie. Very brutal battle scenes. And the uniforms and weaponery seem very realistic. Made me wish we had some naval battles. I know, I know.

If you can m8, rename this topic " Movie reviews", so more people can tell us about great , or the not so great movies they've seen, especially the new release movies ( like I did at the old forum ), cheers m8.
Now I know it is great, I shall endeavour to go and watch it also. _________________

Hi Guys
I went to see Troy yesterday and it was fantastic. The battle scenes were great. It had some bad reviews by the critics, but I thought it was magnificent.

Still wondering if I'm going to see Troy... I heard that Zeus & co aren't present at all - strange. But nice to hear that the battlescenes are great at least.
What about "The Last Emperor"? Worth to buy the dvd?

UGeO,
Troy is a strong "SEE IT" from me. I agree with SirWilliam, it got bad reviews but who cares; it was great movie! It is of course based on the ancient Greek myth BUT I think it has interesting twist. My brother and I agreed (he is quite the scholar). This movie is made as if it WAS history, and does everything in plausible ways but as if to suggest the roots for the mythology.
For instance, Achillies talks to his mother while she is wading through a tidal pool, looking for shells. She has always made him shell necklaces, since childhood. She loves the ocean, and is always there...sooo, later, this could be translated by storytellers into the idea that his mother was a sea sprite or sea goddess. There are others but I won't spoil it. I like how it takes this "realistic" approach. You all know of course that Achillies dies from an arrow in the heel. I had always thought "how in the haides does someone die from an arrow in the heel?!" Well, in this movie, the "roots" for this myth are offered. Very cool.
Another reason I liked this movie was the empathy I felt for both sides. This of course makes for great trajedy, when one can empathises with both sides, and doesn't neccessarily see it all as "good guys' and "bad guys". Both sides have their heros, and honour, and villains, and fools.
Lastly, and this sounds funny, but I thought of the Hawks also when I watched this, the different personalities, the "Hectors" and the "Achillies" and so on. Our group has its own "heros", warriors that when they clash, we all stand back and want to watch. And the respect we have for one another on different levels. Well, that's MY review of Troy, great movie guys, see it. _________________

Hi Guys
Troy was criticised over here for lack of getting familiar with characters in the movie, but I think that's what made the movie better. When they remade Pearl Harbour there was to much getting to know characters and the last 20 mins of the film was the actual attack, which made Pearl Harbour boring. However Troy put some emphasis on the characters but a lot more on the action. I don't like going to see these movies and waiting inbetween love scenes for the next battle sequence, this was a bloody siege and that's what you got.
Also like Drake wrote, you see the story of both sides and not just good versus evil.

excellent guys , especially regarding Troy.
Didn't realise until yesterday, whilst driving to Blackpool, when I spotted a great big billboard advertising the movie was on general release as of friday.
I am just making arrangements as we speak, so I can go and watch it tonight.
Looking forward to it!! _________________

well guys, what can I say?
hmmmmmmmm.......... well I s'pose I could start by saying..................
God damn, what a bloody good movie!!!
If you haven't seen it,or you are thinking about seeing , or you weren't even gonna bother to watch it................then listen up..............."STOP THINKING ABOUT IT and get your backsides to the cinema and marvel in the greatness of this movie!!
I think this movie provides some of the very best battle scenes, whether it's on the grand scale, involving thousands of troops, or simply a 2 man challenge.
The scenery, locations, buildings ( City of TRoy itself ) are absolutely beautiful.
"GO SEE IT"!!! By the way, including the trailers ( 20-25 minutes) the movie will last 2 hours and 50 minutes. _________________

The showdown with Hector and Achilles, was, simply amazing. The sheer amount of work they put into the cinematics, and flow of that fight made it the most impressive one on one fighting I have seen since Gladiator, and took it one step further.
The tale is told without bias, and this goes a long way to improving the storytelling aspect of this movie one hundred-fold. There is nothing worse then a historical/fiction/fantasy movie that is prejudiced towards one side of a major conflict, thus resulting in us simply hearing about how "righteos" one side is for the entire movie. By developing the characters of Hector and Achilles with solid foundations, the director and writers really set the audience up for strong feelings of Pathos as their deaths loom ever on the horizon. I think I speak for almost everyone who saw the movie when I say that they were not happy with the way Achilles treated Hectors corpse, nore at teh Greek hero's death itself, but even after committing such an act, we still feel sorrow at Achilles eventual death at the finale of the movie, and this shows just how masterfully the emotions of the movie were arranged.
Personally, I think the top honours for acting go to the man who played Hector. He made that part come alive, and every minute he was before us we had no dissillusions as to who the hero of the story is. Because he dies in a fight he is so obviously doomed to loose, when he could have simply refused to fight, we simply gain that much more admiration for me, even if it is a sad admiration. That is why I think it is so important to put such epic events into films like this. If enough money, talent, and desire to please is put into a film such as this, with a suitable footground in historical, or fantasical storytelling, then only good things can come of it, and im not just talking about how much they can "oooh" us.
Unfortunately, however, the chief drawback of this movie was it's music. The greatest movies of our time all hold one hting in common, a fantastic score of heart-pounding, powerful music, and though it is seldom noticed by itself, people do not notice how much music truly adds to a scene. If you disbelieve me, simply refer to Gladiator, and imagine what the fight with the Chariots would be like without music, or any one of the Braveheart battle scenes.
Troy's music was suitable, but unimpressive, and it never seemd to fulffill the desire the cinematography had for a lifting chorus of orchestra, and this really resulted in the movie being restrained from the power it could have acheived. It is clear that the makers of Troy did not choose their music director wisely, and I think the movie really suffered for it. A stronger track of music could really have lifted this movie above and beyond the "mediocre" emotion it envoked, and into a spectacular extravaganza for more then just the eyes. Visual treats cannot make a movie a classic by themselves, music must accompany. This movie had mediocre music, and thus, despite the incredible visual aspects, came off as a mediocre display.
Notes: I would suggest you see this movie if you are at all interested in Greek Mythology, or simply enjoy a solid epic film.
Rating: 85/100
