Today is the 60th anniversary of the start of the Battle of the ardennes or ardenne offensive, von runstedt offensive, battle of Bastogne., the last german attempt to stop the allied advance and recapture the belgian cities of Antwerp and Brussels which as we all know failed. _________________

Just finished watching a documentary about it on CANVAS, remember that Belgian channel on tv SittingBull?
So many death civilians... real shame. Due to frustrated SS agressivity, and even a higher number by miscalculated/misinformed American bombing.
We shall never forget what America did for us. There are many reasons why America came to our rescue (why do we European always do so cinical about that!!?), but this has nothing to do with the bravery of the American soldier who gave his life to make an end to the nazi regime in Europe. _________________

On behalf of many, I thank you UGeo for your last post. It touches my heart to know that some do still remember and care about the sacrifices.
I have always known you to be a thoughtful, respectful and caring person.
Thanks again!

We must never forget those who gave their lives for the freedom of so many poeple from so many different nations.
My biggest fear is we don't have many "veterans" from the WW left alive and in the very near future they shall all have passed away and with this the memories may also die with them.

I heard a statistic that claimed the WW2 vets in the USA are pasing away at the rate of about 1,000 per month now due to their advanced age.
But, some of us will not forget and will continue to appreciate the sacrifices the WW2 veterans on the side of the allies made for all of us.

wars need to be forgotten and certainly forgiven my friends. Don t talk about never forget, do not stick to the past.
I will not talk about the reasons why America went to war, I would go to far again but it was mainly out of self defence certainly not out of compasion..... _________________

those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it, we must remember wars because u can not just 4get history an just tell me this, where would europe be if the united states hadnt thrown away millions of lives to save u guys,
i really do wonder why so man europeons seem resentful f the fact that the united states saved you? Is it that terrible to show thanks to a nation that saved your independence?
and as for our reasons for going to war..... our reasons dont change the fact that we sacraficed millions to save europe
im really curious, can some of you europeon hwks tell us why europe is resentful of being saved? _________________

Hey sharpe I wouldnt bother taking it personally m8y.
We Brits have felt a similar attitude from the French ( not all obviously ), because they believe we abandoned them and because we destroyed their naval forces to prevent them falling into the hands of the Germans.
But I care less for those people who have no gratitude for those who laid down their lives for their own forefathers.
All-in-all our forefathers fought for pretty much the same reason...........FREEEDOM ""!!!!.
If we hadn't joined in the war/s then we would have been invaded later on and the same goes for the Americans...................once the whole of Europe was under the control of the Nazi regime and with nothing between the USA and Europe except for water, what would prevent a full scale invasion taking place years down the line.. It makes no difference if there was any "hidden" agendas on the USA joining the war because the bottom line is "they did" and "they threw down many lives"
They fought not only in Western Europe but also on the Eastern front in the Pacific. ( off the top of my head not quite sure if they had troops in Africa or Russia ). _________________

"and as for our reasons for going to war..... our reasons dont change the fact that we sacraficed millions to save europe" I agree, we got rid of the germans the reason why doesn t matter all too much I guess.
BUT what if the germans won WWI? Then now we would be glad they won, europe would be united and german would be the second language of all instead of english. Would we be worse of?? no, surely not I think
AND ALSO, don t forget that those german soldiers were heroes too, they laid their lives for their countries, that makes them just as well heroes as allied soldiers. I al happy Chiraq invited german canselor schröder to the D-day commemoration, but I m pretty sure they did it to annoy bush, I wa soooo amused when they gave that joint press conference together it was like: 'buck kissss my ass' lol _________________
