Yeah, I bought it in hardcover. I enjoy the Sharpe series, although some of them are a little too "Hollywood" for me. It's set during Wellington's retreat to the Lines of Torres Vedras, and is pretty much a typical Sharpe story. A little disappointing, since the books about the subsequent campaigns have already been written - I mean, you sort of know Sharpe's going to survive this, right?
Definitely better than the books Cornwell stuck in about Sharpe's time in India - "Sharpe's Tiger," "Sharpe's Triumph." and "Sharpe's Fortress." These feel to me like they have been written purely to cash in on the dedicated fans of the Sharpe series. They seem to lack the verve of the original books. I am about halfway through "Sharpe's Fortress" now, and have been for several weeks, and I feel no great inclination to continue on. If I end up stuck somewhere and it happens to be handy, then I shall probably finish it. |
