HEy all
I want u to recomend best hisotricall book i ever read -
" The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire " by Edwarg Gibbon ( im sure Elv and Claudius know it - trully as i read in introduction - author should be well known in UK )
Author was an english man - from XVIII C. Hawever this book written most 200 years ago is really much much better than others books written now.
Its really big work -two thick volume - but what is really amazing- u read it so fast like novel ( after 7 days i finished 1 part, now in in the half of second ) Reason that style of Gibbon is just great -sometimes poetic ,sometimes ironic, sometimes reflective. U will never find such nice style in any historicall book written now cos today hisotrians are limited by some strange and stupid customs and they are forced to use "science" langauge.

Book was born moore than 200 years ago hawever its great hisotoricall work - Gibbon is really amazing person - he is really objective - and rather reserved to many sources... He is looking for reall historical truth without any politicall allusions ( ok ok there is few against catholics church ...but its rather justified critics - Gibbon was strange man - he was banned from OXford cos he decided to change religion and to be catholic - hawever he wasnt catholic so long- soon he back to protestans.. )

I want really recomend it to all who loves really good historicall books. D & F of RE - its generally political, ecomomical and social history of ROman - hawever u will find there nice descriptions of wars and battles too.
Please let me know if someone of u know this book

Regards

I bought Gibbon a few days ago in a shorter version. I read that his work is about 16 volymes of roman history. But this cheep version I bought cover about 305 pages.
I also borrowed two newly (into swedish) translated books of the roman writer Livius. His first book about "Roms age of kings" and the second about "The early years of the Republic". Very good books and I want more writers like those mentioned above.

Totally agree with this.

But the whole lecture of this masterpiece took me 5 months (in english of course, because in polish language there are only 2 first tomes till 37th chapter).

I recommend it!
