Hi Guys

Well it would be good if somebody posted a thread about how the hawks was founded and who were the founder members etc.

I started gaming with the first version of Cossacks - European Wars in 2000, but it was not until late after the release of AOW until I discovered the hawks.

I was a Cossacks - AOW deathmatch player for a long time and was one step from becoming a king on the titles, then I realised that there were just to many cheaters and imature players to enjoy it any longer and started playing the standard historical battles. I then started messing around with the map editor and put together what I thought was a half decent map. I left a message on the Cossacks forum asking people if they wanted to try out a map I made and somebody replied saying check out the hawks and left the URL for the hawks site.

Then after looking at the site I realised that my map was a joke and downloaded theirs instead and started looking for hawks at the forum to challenge.

Getting in took a while because I kept challenging DL!!

Who were the founder members of the group, appart from the Drake ??

After getting a victory and joining the group I was in heaven with playing all the maps and meeting all the guys, no arguments no bad mouthing players and everybody was so friendly and didn't cheat.

Then I made my first hawk map in aow called Fontenoy 1745

Yours SW

wow - Congratulation SW - very cool topic for veterans like me icon_smile.gif
I tell u one VERY ANCIENT story from "PRE HAWKs" period. I started play EOW maybe 3 or 4years ago - i was playing most single compaings and from time to time regular historical battles on internet. And one of them i remember very well - it was Nordlingen with player GREENWARRIOR ( YES YES !!!!! ) I was blue - attacker and he red. Each player know than this battle is very hard for blues - so after few clumsy attacks - i lost most of 80% of my army and i said -OK M8 U WON IT. GREENWARRIOR instead to say : GG - said :" LOOKS U ARE TOO POOR TO FIGHT Vs SUCH GREAT PLAYER LIKE ME ! " This kind of reply wasnt specially nice - and i was really angry ...
Few days later i was hosting Historicall Battle Hohenstad as blue - and Greenwarrior joined my game ( i wasnt specially happy to see this rude player icon_smile.gif hawever - it was no rivals - that time u had to wait whole enternity for adversary ... ) If u remeber regular battle of Hohenstad - u must know its easier for reds hawever blue can win it. Greenwarior was very good player - and probobbly expected easy victory - but battle was very dramatic - he won it but in the end had only 20 or 30 units.. AND HE SAID " WELL DONE M8" ! its sounds like compliment so i was little big happy.
After this i was enaught brave to tell him about my secret dream - playing battle on special map -created by player -and asked him if he wants to try another kind of game. Before I found COssacks Heaven web and Waterlloo map which was looking great hawever i never found anyperson to play it.. .
SO i gave link to Green and he loaded map - he never heard about loading maps so it took long time to explain him haw to do it... After maybe 1 hour ( it was 4 at night in my home ) we entered on WATERLOO BATTLEFIELD - AND IM SURE ITS TRUTH - IT WAS MY FIRST INTERNET GAME ON CREATED IN EDITOR MAP - as first such battle it was so great - i remember it very detailed. Battle took maybe 1 maybe 2 hour and was very dramatatic . IN the end i won it as french ( i had maybe 100 units ). Green said something like " I CANT UNDERSTAND IT HAW ITS COULD HAPPEND ?" but i was jumping in my room calling "YES YES YES !!! " cos i had great satisfaction..

In my opinion it was first "HAWKS WAY" game. Later i meet Green again and he kicked my ass at Waterloo - and few days later - he found Balaclava map - we loaded it - after long night of fighting i lost and it was the last out meeting that time ( main reason was another time zone )

All this was in very early PRE HAWKS period - with first version of game Eurpean Wars...
Maybe half year later or even moore i met Drake. LAter Drake created Hawks groups -( i was one of first members ! ) and after few months ... new player joined: his nickname sounds familiar - GREENWARRIOR so we met again.
Hope so Green remember this first Waterloo ( Now this map is on Hawks web as Classic map ( this section is our museum ... )
OK it was my story about the most early contacts with hawks..
Magic of memoirs ...
regards
kosc

Well I knew as much regarding Kos and Green being former members from the start, but it's great to hear that kos managed to whoop yer arse green in those days!! icon_cool.gif icon_lol.gif icon_wink.gif

I met The Drake almost 2 years ago because I was always playing the historical maps on AOW and he informed me of his group and asked if I would like to challenge him - so I did ( cause I hated D.M. games and I'd spent the past 12 months playing just the hist. maps ).

I forget the name of the map, though I know which it is and luckily for me a gained a victory- I still have the original letter of acceptance dated November 1st 2002 which was about 1 week after I had won.

From that email there were 26 names ( including drake ) as members, of which I believe there are still 11 now.

The Drake ; Bhive ; Greenwarrior ; Bud ; Jark ; Kos ; Meik; Rechtaw ; Schooner ; DarkLord ; Me.

Well I've had a thoroughly enjoyable time and try to reward the hawks in the best ways I possibly can. BUt alas I am letting the side down!!
Because until the day comes when I can defeat the following hawks on a regular basis ( if at all ), then I'm losing the fight for "justice for the hawks";

G3 ; D.L. ; Green ; Wom. these 4 are a damned thorn in my side....... icon_evil.gif icon_lol.gif icon_wink.gif

Hi Guys

It's really interesting to hear about the early days and how various members discovered the hawks and joined up.

Cheers Kos and Axle

Hi Guys

I see a pattern here, looks like Greeny's diplomacy and etiquette at the server and forum, formed the group.

GreenWarrior let us know your side of the story please, how do you explain the beginning of the hawks

Ohh man that was a hilarious story kosc, man those were good times!!

Well i started playing cossacks back in teh day when aoe was really popular until one day passing by a story i saw some cossack and saw the number 8000 troops!!! i had to try it!

I tried the deathmatches but alas i had 56k and thus i was always getting disconnected so i decided to play historical battles..

My first few times i used to get beaten, but i was learning with each battle.. then i thought i was getting good until one day i played somebody whoim i really dont remember teh name. He must have thought i was easy pray he was very arrogant and i was so pissed, but i managed to beat him and shut him up good. We played again and he gave me onw of the biggest whoopings ever. After that i decided that i would just be the best ever no matter what and i would never suffer such a defeat like that. As time went on i just played hist battles, and not to be too arrogamt but i was damn GOOD! I got so good that i just got arrogant, i woiuld maybe loose1 in out of 10 battles thats how good i was, i would just make fun of people who just didnt knwo how to play it was sooo much fun, and obviously they would get very ticked, that was all in good fun of course. One of my fastest games was i think one minute, where i moved my troops in position and i just told my opponent to surrender, there was no need to keep on, and he surrendered!! I had a reputation after all. i got to teh point that waiting for battles was an eternity, I would join historical battles, and people would just plead for me to get out cause i would always win. Althought it was funny at first then it got to the point where i was lonely at the top. icon_lol.gif but help was on the way!!!! icon_cool.gif

Well KOsc was one of my hapless victims, and even thought i was an asshole he remained cool. I can still remember theday when we played waterloo it was intense.!!my first ever game, how ironic that a couple of months later 2 guys that belonged to 2 different deathmatch player clans ( kosc was in a polish clan RP i believe and i was in X2 and later BOS clan) would join forces with teh drake to form a group. Pretty soon after much time playing there was a group of what you could say regulars...and those were teh guys i would enjoy playing the most
I remember Bhive especially. poor Bhive, I do not think i was ever rude to him cause he was cool since teh start, i think we played more than 100 times before he could ever beat me, I admire this. We played and we played and I would win all the time. I was beggining to feel bad and all, but i was just not gonna give hium any quarter, but icon_lol.gif he kept on and on like the energizer bunny. At one point I thought if he was masochistic!! icon_lol.gif but he did beat me in the end, and we have ben great friends since, of course other regulars included drake which i considered a very worthy opponent. I do have somebody else to thank besides Kosc for showing me waterloo. Once i played them i was hooked, and I met this guy from the now defunct USAF clan called Recon who had made a map called balaklava. It was the most amazing map I had played to date. As time went one we had more regulars and I met drake. Drake has teh great Idea of creating teh group, and after that was set, I just started trcking down my regulars. I know I told teh countess, dark, rehc, etc. So our group grew and grew and then we started downloading maps from cossack heaven and that 4player site and the rest is history. I was Lord supreme in cossacks until that prick of darklord showed up!! icon_twisted.gif icon_twisted.gif

Just as Kosc had done me teh favor i began teaching people how to download the maps and where to put them. i can still remmeber helping Bhive and dark ohh God that was mission impossible. This dark guy was sure dumb i thought icon_lol.gif !!!

Just like i have put my grain of salt to help this group forward by whooping everybody in here, all our current and past members deserve a big pat in teh back for making this possible.

I am thankful that now I am not as arrogant as i was before. Unlike before you are all at my level now..... well kinda icon_cool.gif .

Am sorry i have given people a bad time, like gex and beimg an asshole to kosc , but sometimes tahst how i could tell if they were cool or not.

I will tell you one thing, the best thing was playing with somebody as equally arrogant as yourself, ohh boy!! teh more arrogant the better for me, cause the sweeter teh victory was. Always fun to shut a bigmouth!

Well those r some of my memories from back in the day!

Green!

Back in 2002 icon_razz.gif

I started playing Aow historical battles because i just sucked at deathmatches never got a better rank than Nobleman or something and people kept calling me noob, when i finally won they called me cheater so i got tired of playing Dm'es icon_razz.gif

I started asking people if they wanted to play the historical battles included in AOW but not many were interested.. THen i saw this guy, Dark lord I belive icon_razz.gif Was constanly creating historical battle games with some weird version called M129.. I got annoyed because I could never join this game, and he was on every time I was on the server LOL icon_razz.gif!!

I asked this dark lord what this M129 was and he told me about the mod.. So i got the mod.. and the following days we played historical battles almost every night, Ofcourse jhe destroyed me no matter which map we played. But after some time, i had got a few wins.. and he told me about some weird groupe playing battles and getting some kind of newsletter every month.. and he gave me The drakes email..

Soon after i had joined the hawks and i was playing my first battle ''big'' battle with the Drake and kos, I think it was BLENHEIM or something, a really old one and I was uhm HOOKED.. After I got in, Drake made some rules about how to join the hawks and the roster started grrowing fast and we were at least 5 hawks on every night.

Very interesting stories guys, now its time to tell mine.

My tale begins about 4 or 5 years ago, when Cossacks first came out. I played the Original Cossacks for several years as a Deathmatch player mostly, with the occasional Historical Batlle game. As I think Kos mentioned, back in those days out of perhaps 80-100 games open on the server, you would be lucky to find one Historical Battle. And If you created one, you would have to be prepared to a 10-60 minute wait until somebody joined. So naturally I played alot of Deathmatches. For I think about 1-2 years I played almost solely deathmatches, joining up with a few clans: first [SOR] (Soldiers of the Realm), then [BOS], then [PUR]. [SOR] has long since been disbanded, and I am not sure as to the status of BOS and PUR but they likely were aswell as this was many years ago. During my many days playing Cossacks: European wars, several times I played with Greenwarrior on historical battles. Like most people here, he was probably one of the only guys I played Historical battles against in the early days, because he was probably the only guy who I ever saw playing them back then. On and off for a little less then a year I played a handful of battles with him, and at first I must say I thought he was quite cheeky and rude, but in the later days when he started showing up with a [HWK] tag, I found him to be much cooler, and amicable. But dont get me wrong, by no means did we play everyday, or often for that matter. I would say that in the year before I joined the Hawks, we played maybe 5 or 6 battles. But every now and then he would drop some kind of comment like "you should check out the Hawks", or "The hawks make maps like this to play on.". Now everytime he would say something like this my interest would be piqued, but I never really pursued it. I just assumed the Hawks were some small group who had 1 or 2 maps they played on, and since I was already in a clan and was primarily a DM player, and since I didnt really think it was possible to make a map for Multiplayer use, I didnt pay the thought of checking out the club much time. Then one day I met Drake on the server (this was just after AoW had come out), and we played a battle. Now, just before AoW came out I had stopped playing Cossacks for about 2 months, and when I came back I found AoW was what almost everyone played. When I went and got it, I immediatly found I disliked AoW deathmatches very much! Suddenly the whole atmosphere of the game had changed for DM's. People played for points, instead of fun, and a whole new slew of over powerful units and nations, (not to mention Millions which I blame to this day for ruining the game online). Lost were the honest, charming days of simply playing a deathmatch for honour, and having to tell your peasants to go into a mine after they finished it. It was then that I left my current clan [BOS], and when I met Drake and again was reccomended to check out the Hawks site (at the time it was thehawks.50megs.com) I jumped at the chance. Within a few hours, I was a Hawk.

After that I was a regular player, and member (I think I was the 26th at the time, and Drake said he didnt want the club to get much bigger after that. For about a year following my first joining I came to discover the awesome potential for Historical gaming that Green had been mentioning for so long, and that I had ignored. I played many battles after this with a ton of Hawks, namely: Schooner, Axel, DL, Green, Drake, William, and many more. I actually remember the first battle I played as a hawk, the original Cossacks version of "Austrialitz" with Drake, Green, DL, and Schooner. Those were some good times.

A little over a year ago I created my first Historical map "Queenston Heights", and then about 10 months later (June, 2004) I made my second Lundy's Lane. The two of them have been my only maps because of the amount of effort I found it took to produce one (I am very picky with myself and usualy restart my maps 10 or more times before I get something I like), and that is why I have made them so far apart.

About 9 months ago I opened my cd tray to find my AoW cd cracked, (still dont know how that happened), and thus I have been unable to play Cossacks since then. In addition, about 4 months ago I lost track of my AC cd key, so have been unable to play that aswell. There is the option that I could go buy another copy, but there is a long list of things demanding my money (meagre as my supply is at 16), and sadly a second copy of either game is not high on it. However, I do eagerly await Cossacks 2, and will continue to be an avid supporter of the Hawks, and member as long as Drake and the Crew will have me. And when I get the willpower to make another map, there shall be one.

Cheers,

-Shifty
