[edit] Battle Screen
You do not have to click anything on the battle screen, it simply shows you what is happening. You can click anywhere to skip to the results of the battle, and then click again to end the battle and close the battle screen.
The battle screen shows the strategies in use by either side. It also shows how the strategies used compare when matched with each other. Each side will have a number of stars shown above their strategy diagram, totaling 20 stars between both sides. The side with more stars has the better strategy in this matchup. The number of stars only shows the strategy matchup, not any other factors like troops, terrain or anything else!
[edit] How battles are decided
These factors can affect the outcome of a battle.
[edit] Troops
As may be expected, having more troops in a battle makes you more likely to win.
[edit] Strategies
The strategies have several different effects on the battle. Most importantly, each strategy is good against certain other strategies. For instance, Assault in the Center is not good against Defensive Position, but it would be good against Defend Both Flanks. There is a table in strat_matchups.csv listing all of the different matchups.
The strategy matchups are one of the aspects of strategy in Plot & Conquer. Every time one of your generals fights a battle, the strategy he used is added to his history, which you can see by mousing over him on the map. When an enemy general fights a battle in a region that you can see, the strategy he uses is added to your history of that general. After generals have fought many battles, it becomes clear what their preferred strategies are. You can use this knowledge to decide which general to use to fight a particular enemy general, if you are experienced with the strategy matchups.
Strategies also have other effects. For instance, some strategies will result in a more bloody battle. A fighting withdrawal will result in less casualties overall than a cavalry assault, for example. Certain strategies also are more or less effective in difficult terrain. For instance, ambushes and defensive strategies are better in rough terrain, while any strategy involving cavalry attacks is less effective.
So excited I found this atirlce as it made things much quicker!
