The "Hawks European Warfare; Napoleonica" (HEW) Mod was developed by [HWK]GeXozoid using the "American Conquest - Fight Back" game engine and was finally completed for our club in April of 2009. HEW brings to the war gamer vast new numbers of troops, cavalry and cannon from the major contending nations of that conflagration that engulfed Europe for nearly 2 decades known as the Napoleonic Wars. Line infantry, grenadiers, skirmishers, heavy cavalry, hussars, lancers etc of France, England, Poland, Austria, Prussia, Russia, Spain and troops from other lesser contenders are now seen on the battlefield. The dynamics of volley fire, cannister, moral etc have been drastically changed to be more historically accurate.
Besides hundreds of new troop types, vast arrays of other novel features are now available. Famous generals (Napoleon, Wellington, Blucher etc), civilians, buildings, and other objects have been added to the game. One of the most unique new items is the pontoon bridge, which allow for realistic looking river crossings on certain historical maps where they were an integral feature of the real battle (like Aspern-Essling, Wagram and Berezina). Fortress walls, palisades, supply generating packhorses, giant Ships of the Line and objective flags capable of capture are some more of the map enhancing objects featured in HEW.
Maps have also become more interactive and realistic with the addition of the defense bonus available to map makers in Editor. Map makers may add these special defense bonuses to their own trenches, walls, redoubts and any other places on a map that logically would provide cover for troops. Trees also provide a degree of cover by default and thus placing troops on the edge of a forest has become a tenable strategic position. A whole new redoubt structure that provides cover is also available and may by placed on the map in Editor or built by engineers in battle (if allowed by the map maker). In addition to redoubts, engineers/pioneers/sappers may also build explosive charges.
A garrisoned house used to be a unrealistic killing machine, out of sync with its historical impact. Now garrisoned buildings have a more realistic influence on battle and flank protection. While they are still not easy to storm, they only emit fire damage in accordance with the troops that occupy them. Also, in an effort to facilitate realistic urban combat, troops can lob anti-structure grenades at enemy buildings. Though all types of infantry were outfitted with grenades in the Napoleonic era, for the sake of game play dynamics, only the grenadiers of each nation in HEW have grenade lobbing capabilities. This mod includes unique strategic features, such as generals boosting troop morale, squares having significant impact against cavalry, massed ranks and mobs being especially vulnerable to panic, cannister effecting morale to a greater degree while causing far fewer and more random casualites, formation types greatly effecting cold steel bonus vs firepower, significant differences in elite troops vs regular troops in regards to types of performance and many other modified strategic aspects.
The Hawks Club creates and perfects Napoleonic battle maps using HEW and has made them available for all interested players to download. Visit our "Napoleonic MOD (HEW)" page to learn more about them. These maps are
researched extensively and are based on actual historical Napoleonic battles using
historical maps and texts to recreate the terrain and determine troop positions. The maps are meant for multi-player battles involving as many as 7 gamers in one room. Once you have joined in epic battle with members of our club you will be hooked. Join us on the field!
